Little Addition |
2003 |
It is not often that a client's wish list can be fully realized with the grace and style that the Little Addition exudes. The clients had bought a 1200 s.f. two bedroom, block, beach bungalow and wanted, well, more. Specifically they wanted a family room, a formal living room, A formal dining room, a larger kitchen, taller ceilings, and a "Key West", Cracker" facade. And yes, they were willing to demolish the roof to get it.
The structure was strengthened with an addition two feet of ceiling height and a new tie beam on the first floor. A spacious master suite and two other bedrooms were designed for the second floor, opening the first floor for a complete redesign. A "just one more" proposal of the upstairs to include a lounge with a good morning kitchen exceeded the client’s expectations to their delight. With the bedrooms placed upstairs, the first floor was dedicated to entertaining space. A central stairwell and guest bath separated the new living room and family room spaces, lending privacy to them without blocking access to the entry and kitchen. Additional square footage was designed alongside an existing dining room to the rear to house the new kitchen and a porch. A double veranda with stately square columns was designed for the front of the home to provide gracious outdoor space and the "Cracker" elevation. This architectural look was completed with cement fiber lap siding and metal roofing.
Every time I pass this home, I can't help but think to myself, "Damn! Now I want one."
